Saint Kevin

5844 28th Avenue South - closed, demolished
Minneapolis 17, Minnesota

Saint Kevin School, 1969

This photo of Saint Kevin School was submitted by Sharon (Ingwalson) Klanchnik, an RHS graduate, 1980
Here is a view of the front of the school on 28th Avenue South.

The School of Saint Kevin opened its doors ca.1948 based on the photo below. (The church opened in 1941 per B. J. Hazel, St. Kevin, Class of '62.)  It is now closed and demolished.
ďAll the St Kevin buildings are gone.  I think the land is owned by the airport or the air force ... not sure which."

I do not have further information, but will provide it should I receive it.

In response to my question
about the parochial school system, Pat Donnelly, BHS 1968 explained that "it offered first through eighth grades.
Then one would go on to Holy Angels, Regina, or DeLaSalle for 9-12; but many students switched to public school due to the cost.
St. Kevin served kids in Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Richfield.  We Minneapolis kids would have gone to Nokomis and then Roosevelt.
Kids coming out of St. Helena went to Sanford and then Roosevelt."

"I am attaching the front page of the church bulletin for St. Kevin's 50th Anniversary.
I would have graduated from RHS in 1968, but we moved to Bloomington in 1966.  However, I remember all of those drive-ins and I attended St. Kevin, Nokomis, Roosevelt and Morris Park."

Saint Kevin  c.498 - June 3, 618

Born:  c.498 at the Fort of the White Fountain, Leinster, Ireland

Died:  June 3, 618 of natural causes

Known in Ireland as Coemgen as well as Kevin, according to tradition he was born at the Fort of the White Fountain in Leinster, Ireland, of royal descent.  He was baptized by St. Cronan and educated by St. Petroc.  He was ordained, and became a hermit at the Valley of the Two Lakes in Glendalough.  After seven years there, he was persuaded to give up his solitary life.  He went to Disert-Coemgen, where he founded a monastery for the disciples he attracted, and later moved to Glendalough.  He made a pilgrimage to Rome, bringing back many relics for his permanent foundation at Glendalough.  He was a friend of St. Kieran of Clonmacnois, and was entrusted with the raising of the son of King Colman of Ui Faelain, by the king.  Many extravagant miracles were attributed to Kevin, and he was reputed to be 120 years old at his death.  His feast day is June 3rd.
